MARGARET MEAD
For 43 years, the Canton Library has been a
cornerstone of my family's life. My commitment
deepened through years of volunteering, leading to
my election as Library Trustee in 1995. Since then,
I've served as secretary and chair, played a key role
in the 2003 renovation, and currently lead the capital
campaign called "The Next Chapter," which aims to
secure funding for essential repairs and renovations. My commitment to Canton extends beyond the library, as I also volunteer at the Canton Food Pantry and am a member of the Master Planning Implementation Committee.

My professional background includes a decade running my own sales business, providing academic regalia to colleges and universities, and a successful career as a senior product manager at Balfour, where I oversaw a $14 million product line. I hold a bachelor’s degree from Le Moyne College and pursued graduate studies at Syracuse University in Library Science and Boston University in Business.
Our library is a vital community hub, welcoming nearly 200,000 visitors annually—more than any other municipal building except schools. In 2024, our excellent librarians presented 628 programs attended by 15,159 children and adults. Each day after school, 30 to 50 teens and tweens come to the library for programs, homework help and to have a safe place to be when there is no one at home.
Library use has changed significantly in the twenty years since the last renovation. Although there is no need to expand the building’s footprint, we do need to reconfigure the space to include more rooms for meetings and quiet study. The major issue is noise mitigation as we need to separate the naturally noisier teens from people looking for places to work and study.
"The Next Chapter" is a multi-phased project designed to address the library's evolving needs. We’ve achieved significant milestones:
-
Chapter 1 is the roof and HVAC replacement. The project is nearly complete and significantly under budget thanks to the Building Renovation Committee.
-
Chapter 2 is the Library Park. The front lawn facing Washington Street will be replaced with chairs, tables, electricity, WIFI and native plantings and will commence construction this summer. The project is fully funded by CPA funds and money raised from personalized bricks. The brick sale was very successful with over 320 bricks purchased by Canton citizens and businesses.
-
Chapter 3 is the interior repair and renovation. This will address the interior damage from the leaking roof and reconfigure the interior of the library.
As chair of the capital campaign, I've leveraged my extensive marketing experience to lead a team of 15 volunteers, raising over $100,000. Our primary goal is to ensure that every Canton resident understands the importance of "The Next Chapter" to our library.
I'm deeply committed to preserving and enhancing our beloved library for future generations. I respectfully ask for your vote to continue serving as Library Trustee, building on more than 30 years of dedicated service to our community.
